I’ve been using Wordpress 2.1 for a couple of days now. From the outside (what the readers see) there isnt much change, if any, but for people who blog with Wordpress, there are some very practical improvements.
- There is a new text editor (spell checking is now standard, I used to use Firefox’s built-in spell checker in 2.0), which allows you to switch between “visual” and code editor seamlessly.
- Auto-saving of posts (although I cant understand why the post should be named in order for it to be auto-saved) is very handy cause sometimes when I type and I hit backspace to erase a letter/word the it will take the browser back to the previous page, and what I wrote would be gone.
There are other improvements but they are all behind the scene, like better comment management, a more efficient code for the database, a new upload manager where you manage all your uploaded files, and many others.
A major issue that makes people think twice about upgrading is because of their plugins. Most of my plugins worked fine with 2.1, for the ones that didnt, the plugin developers have released new versions that supported Wordpress 2.1 (a big thank you to them).
Its been downloaded over 130,000 times now, hopefully many more will upgrade once the word gets out that everything is fine with 2.1.

I need to upgrade! I haven’t upgraded from I dont know what! And Now my host says upgrade to 2.1!
Can I do that directly?!?!?! Im going to get lost with this!
Because of all your upgrading I have developed a phobia! hehehehe
How did you bring up your smilies up here in the comment page.. I am seeing this becoming more of a standard.
I like to wait with Wordpress. It is better to make sure the bugs are knocked out and plugins are adjusted. Being bleeding edge at times can leave you bloody and hurting
Um I have this cpanel fastkitco thing do I need to backup everything before I press the magic button like disable plugins and stuff? or just pres it and everything is ok? never tried an upgrade yet
nibaq,

what you said is true, but so far with wordpress, i havent experienced that
well 2.1 has been out in beta for ppl who are in the testers group, and there werent many problems with it, i havent had any problems so far, i always update right away, never had any problems that would have made me down-grade.
TAT,
sorry i am not familiar with fantastico
but its not that hard, disable plugins, backup the database using the db backup plugin (fastest way), download ur files via ftp, then delete the wp-admin, wp-includes, and all files in ur root directory (wordpress related files that is) and upload the new version, run the upgrade script, and ur done
(personally, i only backup the database :P)
