I have tried changing browsers a bunch of times but to no avail.

first problem is the tabs, in firefox on the mac i press command 1 for the first tab, command 3 for the third tab etc… havent found another browser that will allow me to do this

second problem is the search engines, i have a bunch of important search engines i use all the time and other browsers dont allow me to easily ad these engines..

Welcome to the club. Like I said, Opera is like a super mutant who was born crippled. It’s nice in a subtle way, not something we can try benchmarking with Firefox.

But at the same time, there’s enough sites that don’t work on Opera that make sure it stays being a cult browser of proud users like me.

      Mark,
Ctrl + # also works with windows, i dont really use it, too much work when it comes to figuring out whats the number of the tab u want. i just use ctrl+tab to go through my tabs.
in opera u can use ctrl+tab, but its better than firefox, a menu pops up and lists all tabs, u keep pressing tab until u get the tab u want, similar to alt+tab in windows. or i can right click and scroll up and down with the scroll wheel, the same menu pops up. its super easy, and very practical, really beats firefox in that sense.

      GRex,
I still didnt encounter a site that doesnt support opera, on your blog you mentioned that youtube doesnt work, well it does for me. What sites dont support opera?

All the stuff u mentioned can be achieved by firefox extensions.

Only difference between opera and firefox is that opera consumes less memory.

The widgets are mostly useless in my opinion. If u close the browser, they’re gone.

You can also retrieve accidentally deleted tabs in Firefox by centre-clicking on the tab bar (in an empty space, not on any tab). Mouse gestures are also supported on FF and I love the extensions options where you can download useful and interesting add-ons. I also use one that provides me weather updates in Kuwait and other cities of interest to me. Nice to know there are a few competetive products/options out there now.

I have been using Opera for a very long time. What I like best are the tabs, I have my roll ball button set to open a link in a new tab when I click on it. It is really fun to use and has a very small footprint. The widgets are clunky but still useful. I used firefox and it was very bloated and slow. Opera 8 could not render some sites properly, but the Opera team did a lot of hard work and I cannot find any site that Opera 9 cannot handle.

      Carslb3rg & Sabah,
the only edge i see that firefox has over opera is that it is widely used which in case creates more extensions for firefox and makes it customizeable. Firefox is open source so we can all chip in and help the browser. To me what makes opera special is that many of the of these options that make browsing better, in my view, is that they come as standard.

      Don Veto,
yeah that feature is really handy, it is a really handy browser that was designed in making people browse flawlessly and easily.
I too havent run across a site that didnt open up on Opera, I have been using it for 4 days now, using it as my main browser, and I havent run into a single problem yet.

Yazeed i dont know how you can say Opera is more practical when it comes to tabs.

Lets say I have 8 tabs open. I am on tab #1 and I want to go to tab #6.

      Firefox:
      CTRL + 6

      Opera:
      ALT + TAB + TAB + TAB + TAB + TAB

In opera if I accidently press an extra TAB and pass tab #6 I have to press TAB like 8 more times to get back to the tab I want.

      Thats not practical…

The lack of a large variety of extensions in Opera should also be another weak point. The extensions in Firefox helps make life easier. BugMeNot and Del.icio.us’s TAGthis are two extensions which make my life very easy. Extensions allow you to customize Firefox to your liking.

Search engines is another option in Firefox that makes life “super easy”. I have engines for Torrentspy, Torrentz, ThePirateBay, Wikipedia, IMDB etc.. I couldn’t figure out how to add them in Opera. Firefox its just a click of a button..

You gave Opera 4.5 out of 5 but you really didn’t mention any advantages over Firefox. I believe Opera loads pages faster then Firefox but other then that I don’t know of any other advantage..

      Mark,
first of all, as i said, you dont have to use ctrl+tab, just right click and scroll. it better the ctrl+tab or +# cause u have to figure out the tab number when u have a lot of tabs.

the only reason i gave it 4.5 is because it doesnt have as much support as firefox, with extensions and such.
mark, whats not practical for you, maybe practical for others.
the addins u mentioned dont come standard in firefox, someone either made an extention or that these sites created addins for firefox. the only reason its not available on opera is because, and i have said this in almost every comment i made here, firefox is more widely used than opera.

      I'm having a problem installing Opera 9.02 on FC5.
Every time I try to run it, it comes back with a “unable to find software information” error.
When I try to run it from the command line, I get 6 conflict errors.
I must add that I already have Opera 8.54 but I close it down before I try and run it.
