I havent been following the Arab Summit (I thought it was starting this Saturday), so I was surprised to see that CNN was attacking Saudi Arabia today. Apparently King Abdullah attacked the US and said that their occupation of Iraq is illegitimate. Why care of what a foreign king thinks about your war, when most of the citizens in your country are against it? When most of the presidential nominees are vowing to withdraw US troops when they get elected. Plus many of the world leaders think the same.
Its nice to see him actually say that, it will at least take away the image of Saudi being the US’s slave and agreeing to whatever they do and want.
Saud Al Faisal :”If that country had chosen to have those troops, then it’s something else. But any military action that is not requested by a specific country — that is the definition of occupation.”
Also it seems that the Arabs have again offered Israel another peace plan. Basically if Israel can agree with the countries it is in conflict with, Lebanon (the whole Hizballah fiasco), Syria (Golan), and Palestine (retreat to the 1967 borders and find a solution with the displaced people after 1948), the rest of the Arab countries will establish relations with Israel. Hmmm. Is that motivation enough for the Israelis? They have all that land now, the rest of the sides arent really putting that much “resistance” anyways. What would they gain from having official relations with the rest of the Arab world? If I was Israel I would laugh it off. Seems like its same old same old with this issue. Israeli media view on the summit, can be found here (atleast one view of it). With a view like that you think there is a chance for peace?

The Arab summit always cracks me up! I mean why do they even bother wasting all this money? They always come out with the same resolutions - they just phrase them differently! They never knew how to play it right. Plus, is it wise to come now and say its an occupation? Considering that is, the current turbulent political state of the ME. Does that not only add more fuel to the already blazing fire? I don’t think it’s the right time, but then I’ll keep my views to myself on that aspect.
I loved how Saudi Al-Faisal addressed the question!
i hate the arab summit
its pointless
and boring
and they never do anything
