American Media: Brilliant, Interesting, or Just Plain Stupid?!

I keep getting mixed signals from myself when I watch some type of shows on American TV. At first I just thought it was plain stupid, then I would tell myself that they are interesting, then I tell myself that they are brilliant, then I do the same cycle all over again.

I am talking about shows like The World Series of Poker, which is on all night, and those over hyped cooking shows like Iron Chef America, plus many different over hyped “stupid” shows. Both of the shows I mentioned feature commentators, studios where people talk about what happened, advertising on instant replays (we are talking about turning cards or cutting a cucumber!!). The first impression I got was that these people have nothing better to do, and/or didnt find jobs on “higher rated” shows. Then I say that they are interesting since I didnt see such shows before I came to the states. Then I would say that they are absolutely brilliant (I am talking about the people who are behind the scenes) in making such boring shows actually enjoying to watch, for some reason that I do not understand.

I was watching Iron Chef America tonight, and it blew me away, not the content, since I cant cook, but the whole thing behind it. They had this “Kitchen Stadium”? where they have two fully equipped kitchens. Then they get these two chefs and they are both given a main ingredient for their dishes, in this case it was lobster, and they are given one hour to come up with a number of dishes. After that three judges rate each dish and declare the winner. They had two commentators who tried to explain what was going on, they had this “ground reporter” who went from kitchen to kitchen and explained what he saw, cameras all over the place, it was fast paced and intense. I got really into it, near the end I realized that it was JUST A COOKING SHOW, but I couldnt change the channel, I WAS HOOKED. I was watching it with a friend and we where both predicting who will win it (it turned out to be a draw, thats the first time it ever happened on the show).

The same thing goes for the poker shows, at first I thought its just people sitting in a table playing poker, what a bore. The way they integrate different things, commentators, reports, highlights, makes its enjoyable to watch (if there is nothing better on TV that is). Now I am thinking how brilliant these people are (ask me again in a few minutes and I might give you a different answer).

I know what you mean! But watching the poker games, and seeing how some of these players play is amazing! Because they really have to figure out what the other person is thinking and how they usually play their cards! Its rediculous! U have to figure out what are your chances with your cards and what kind of cards the other person has! Its crazy!

yeah, one thing i learned fro watching poker is that its more than figuring out what the player has, a lot more calculations are involved.
